How to Claim Up to $3,450 in Government Grants for an Auckland Heat Pump

Modern heat pump installed in a living room

Winter in Auckland can be damp, cold, and expensive to heat through. But if you own your home, you might be sitting on a massive opportunity to upgrade your heating for a fraction of the retail cost. The EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes programme is currently offering substantial grants to help Kiwis stay warm and healthy.

The Grant Cap & Coverage Explained

The current government grant covers up to 90% of the cost of an approved high-wall split system heat pump, capped at a maximum of $3,450.

For a standard living room heat pump (typically a 5kW to 6kW unit), the total installed cost usually ranges between $2,500 and $3,500. Because the grant covers 90% up to the cap, many eligible Auckland homeowners are getting premium, energy-efficient heat pumps installed for just a few hundred dollars out of pocket.

Important Update for 2026

As of early 2026, grants for wood and pellet burners have officially ceased. The EECA programme is now exclusively focused on clean, efficient electric heating—making heat pumps the core focus of the funding.

The Three Main Eligibility Rules

To qualify for the heat pump grant, you must meet three primary criteria:

  1. You must be the owner-occupier: You must own the home and live in it. Landlords and renters are not eligible.
  2. Your home must be built before 2008: Newer homes are excluded as they were built under updated building codes.
  3. You must meet the income or location criteria: You need to either hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card, OR live in an area designated as lower-income.

How the Grant Works

One of the best parts of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme is that you don't have to pay the full amount upfront and wait for a rebate.

The grant is applied directly as a discount on your quote from an EECA-approved installer. You only ever pay the remaining balance. For a typical installation, this means your out-of-pocket expense is usually between $400 and $700.

Real-World Scenario

Sarah lives in Henderson (a qualifying area) in a 1990s home.

  • Total Quote for 5kW Heat Pump:$3,100
  • EECA Grant (90%):-$2,790
  • Sarah Pays:$310

How Kiwuote Helps You Maximize Savings

While the grant covers 90%, the final price you pay depends entirely on the initial quote from the installer. Different EECA-approved providers charge different rates for the exact same heat pump models.

That's where Kiwuote comes in. As an independent comparison platform, we connect you with multiple EECA-approved installers in Auckland. By comparing quotes, you ensure the base price is competitive.
