Where Warmer Kiwi Homes funding matters most

The EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes programme — which can cover up to 90% of an approved heat pump install, capped at $3,450 — is targeted at owner-occupiers who hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card, or who live in a lower-income area. A meaningful share of South Auckland suburbs, including parts of Manurewa, Papakura, Otara and Mangere, fall within this criteria more often than the Auckland average.

A growth corridor with different needs

Takanini, Karaka and Drury have grown rapidly over the last several years, with new subdivisions bringing modern, well-insulated homes that are usually straightforward, efficient installs. If you're in one of these newer developments, a single well-sized high-wall unit is often all that's needed for open-plan living areas.

Further into Pukekohe and Waiuku, sections get larger and more rural, which sometimes calls for multi-zone or ducted systems to cover separate wings of the house — worth flagging property size when requesting quotes.

Established suburbs, older housing stock

Manurewa, Papatoetoe, Otara and Mangere have a large stock of homes built from the 1960s to 1980s. These homes often benefit most from a properly sized heat pump replacing older, inefficient heating — and it's exactly this housing profile the Warmer Kiwi Homes funding was designed around.
