Granny flats up to 70m² without a building consent
Since 15 January 2026, a detached single-storey dwelling up to 70m² can be built without building consent if it meets the conditions - saving consent fees and time. Licensed Building Practitioners must do or supervise the work, council must be notified, and resource consent may still apply.
